Design and Sew A Wedding Dress

Jamaican Designers Can you Design & Sew a Wedding Dress in 6 weeks? What will the theme be this year???

Helen G Events is an internationally respected destination wedding planning company in Jamaica and the winner of the prestigious ‘Brides Choice Awards’ for 2013 and Couples Choice Award for 2015 and 2016 on Wedding Wire. They were credited in the August 2015 issue of Destination Weddings Magazine as one of the top 5 reasons for getting married in Jamaica. In 2014 Helen G embarked on a mission to create a signature wedding event in Jamaica that would give wedding planners, future brides, and members of the service industry an opportunity to interact with each other in a meaningful way. The event was a tremendous success and was again executed in 2016 and in January 2017 with partnerships with Jamaica’s two biggest media houses the Gleaner Jamaica Limited and the RJR Jamaica Group. The Make Your Day Event was so successful that we decided to do a third staging next year again on Sunday January 28, 2018.

The Make Your Day Wedding Event features a Wedding Market & Wedding Planning Workshop as well as a Design A Dress Competition which is a Wedding Dress Design and Sew Competition for young Jamaican Designers where fans on social media select the top 5 dresses for about 10 to 20 entrants and a panel of judges select a wild card. The panel of judges then select the top 3 in a final showing that we host on Sunday January 28th at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort & Spa.

This is our 3rd year and we will have a new and exciting format this year and exciting prizes for our top 3 competitors. Again social media will select our top 5 and a wild card selection by our panel of judges. But there is a twist.

Stay tuned for details.

Helen G Beach Wedding Dress Design Challenge

Please see below for the Jamaica Gleaner:

Award-winning Destination Wedding planner Helen Graham of HelenG, has put out a challenge to young designers to create the ultimate beach wedding dress in four weeks, and they delivered!

In its second year, the Make Your Day Bridal workshop and fashion show decided to throw out a challenge to young designers to create a beach themed wedding dress and 15 young designers and their wedding dress creations were unveiled recently at Eden Gardens.

The photos have been uploaded on HelenG’s Facebook page where you can vote for your favourite. The top-five dresses with the most likes will be on show at the live fashion show on February 13 where the judges, lead by Dexter3D Pottinger, will determine which dress is the ultimate dress.

According to Graham, “I wanted to do something different this year and I thought that a design-a-dress competition would be a great challenge. We chose a beach theme because a lot of brides come to Jamaica to have their wedding on our beautiful white-sand beaches, and this competition, I hope, will expose our young designers to potential clients.”

On Saturday, February 13, Eden Gardens will come alive with an amazing fashion show highlighting the latest trends from Jamaica’s top bridal boutiques.

The event will also showcase the designs of the young designers who will also have the opportunity to showcase some of their other work.

The Make Your Day Fashion show themed ‘The year of the dresses’ will start at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from Fashion Fever in York Plaza as well as Eden Gardens. Tickets are available presold for $1,000 general and $2,500 VIP.

The online voting will end at 4 p.m. on February 10.

Wedding Dress Tips

Over the last 10 years we have seen some brides totally unhappy with the fit of their wedding dress come wedding day or some other aspect having to do their most prized possession. Their wedding dress.

Here are 6 wedding dress tips that may help you when selecting or traveling with your wedding dress:

1. Your wedding dress should fit the venue and your vision for the day. Its best to have your wedding date and venue before you purchase your dress.

2. Allot enough time for alterations. Your wedding dress is important. So make sure you give yourself enough time to get it right.

3.  Your dress should look and feel good whether you are dancing, standing or sitting. Test out your wedding dress. Try sitting in it at the bridal store. Walk in it to make sure that this is how you want your wedding dress to feel when you move or sit in it.

4. Consult with experts on how to transport your dress before on and after the big day.  For destination wedding brides please check with your airline re taking the dress on board with you.

5. Perhaps one of our most important wedding dress tip. The silhouette of the wedding dress must flattering on you. Many times brides go in with a picture of the dress they want and are dead set on getting that particular dress, it might not be what you think so trust the experts to help you find the best one for you.

6. When selecting your wedding dress avoid going with trends. Remember you weddingr pictures will last a life time and you don’t want any regrets so go with a dress that you will love now and possibly 15 to 20 years later.

Boutonniere Tips

The word boutonniere is derived  the French word for buttonhole. Most brides I know overlook the boutonniere selection process. It is often the florist or wedding planner that raises any concern or questions re the boutonniere selection. Choosing the right boutonniere is very important.

There are two main types of boutonnieres:

1. Classic Boutonnieres such as a rosebud or a miniature calla lily as show below.

2. The Contemporary Boutonniere such a tiny branch of berries or an orchid as shown below:

But how do you choose your wedding boutonniere:

The color of your wedding boutonniere can be chosen to either complement or contrast the color of the groom’s outfit. Once you have chosen the groom’s boutonniere you need to ensure that the bestman and groomsmen boutonniere’s are selected also along the same guideline and that they look good. If you select a yellow rose for the groom in a turquoise and yellow wedding you can select a turquoise bloom for the men. Keep in mind the bestman and groomsmen should complement the MOH and bridesmaids.

How do you wear a wedding boutonniere?

The boutonniere should be worn on the outside of the left lapel. Many persons use various methods to pin the boutonniere. One method is holding the boutonniere by the stem in your left hand, place the boutonniere on the lapel below the buttonhole. Holding the pin in your right hand start from the back of the lapel push it through the fabric just below the head of the flower. Cross the length of the pin over the stem and reinsert back into the fabric so the pin head rests behind the lapel or I prefer to do the opposite and letting the pearl head pin show.

Flower Power Dresses For Wedding Guests

Floral prints are in for this wedding season and its definitely evident in the dresses available on the racks in the stores. Wedding guests have a large array of dresses to choose from to show their flower power style. The good news is there’s more than one way to wear florals this summer. It seems there are NO RULES  when is comes to to floral prints but I can think of a couple. Flower power is fun and makes you look and feel great. When wearing floral to a formal event such as a wedding please note the following:

  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Do not over accessorize.

Below are examples of some flower power prints I just love for persons attending weddings this season as a guest:

Yellow floral print dress below can be purchased at, blue and pink floral dress can be purchased at and navy floral dress can be purchased also at
